Music & Icons
When we came across Anthony Morell's Instagram, @Music_is_minimalist, we fell instantly in love with his iconic song interpretations. We had a chance to chat with Anthony and learn about his inspiration, as well as get some music recommendations. Enjoy!
Hi Anthony, Can you tell us a little about your background and who you are?
I’m Anthony Morell. I am from Rodez, France, a small town in the countryside. I’m 21 and I’ve been studying Graphic design in Ecole supérieure d’Art des Pyrénées in Pau for 3 years. I have always loved drawing and creating since I was a child.
How did you get started creating your music illustrations?
The idea of the project began with a need to make things I loved daily. I was inspired by lots of people from Instagram that were doing daily projects, like @every_hey for example. Music is a continual source of inspiration, and I had the idea of using the song titles to create minimalist daily icons. I wanted to create simple, clear and fun icons to associate with songs I like. I chose to create icons because they speak a global language, they are universal.
What is your goal with these images; is there anything you are trying to accomplish by creating them?
The main goal is to divert the meaning of the title, with a touch of humor, irony. I try to give another meaning to the title. It’s just for fun!
Can you describe your design process, starting from inspiration to execution?
Ideas come from everywhere and everyday. I listen a lots of music and frequently the song title interpellate me, so I take my notebook and draw ideas. For this project, I don’t take time to research specific song titles or icons. I always start by sketching with pencil on notebook to find the best icon, the best way to transpose the song title. And after I numerise the icon in Adobe illustrator.
What are some of your favorite pieces that you’ve created?
My favorite pieces are those that most distort the meaning of the song title, with an offbeat and funny side like the icon for Muse’s song Save me, or Drake’s song, Energy. I also like the icon for Arcade Fire’s song, My Heart is an Apple.
Do you have any good music recommendations?
I listen to all genres of music. At the moment, I recommend artists like Hudson Mohawke, Tame Impala, Foals, Action Bronson and Paul Kalkbrenner.
